I bet that this professor whose laptop was stolen will probably also face quite a few issues with those huge companies that he works with. Security for material of that importance is a very high priority for those companies, and he was in charge of the security for his laptop. It does not matter that the laptop was stolen by someone else, that professor (or whoever he was) was still responsible for it.

I do not condone that the stealing of the laptop is O.K. and I think the student should be punished severely for the theft (expulsion at least, IMO), but if it was that important, then the professor was foolish to leave it unattended in a place where it could be compromised.

Whatever happens with this case, I doubt that professor will be working for any of these big companies after this incident, or at least will not be entrusted with any important material. I hope he has tenure because this incident could look bad for the school (major companies opting not to work with the school for fear of a security breach which would mean the loss of a lot of money) and they may decide to solve the issue by removing all parts of the problem.

I am also pretty impressed with the 15 minute reinstall of Windows. I have a very fast computer at work and it still takes almost 25 minutes to install Windows XP Pro on that machine...I personally think that the first thing that professor did was soil himself for 15 minutes when he realized that the laptop was missing, and then reinstall Windows .
