Race does contribute as to how many points you can have in certain stats i.e. elves can have 19 dex but only 17 con
For some classes (Ranger and Paladin spring to mind) it's easier to get high rolls because of the high stats they need in the first place
My highest roll was 95 for a Paladin but I've just started again and decided to take the first roll that came up (78) to give me a bit more of a challange rather than up the difficulty slider.
