Yes. It makes the game much better. See if you can find the bundle with the original 5 disks and the one expansion disk rather than the new Original Saga which consists of fewer disks (is it three?) and puts the manual in PDF format. (Even better would be the original BG1 DVD--a single disk--if you have a drive that can play DVD's, and then find the expansion disk separately.)
Tales of the Sword Coast raises the experience cap to 161,000 (BG1's is only 89,000 without Tales). It adds four new areas/excellent quests to rack up experience in. So if you wish to take your character into BG2 you can do so at a higher level. Tales also adds new spells, weapons, armor, improves some features such as item identification and stacking.
