It doesn't make much sense that a cleric can't use a sword in
combat, and a mage with 17 strength couldn't wield a two-handed
sword.

It makes perfect sense to me. Why would a pure mage want to use crude things like metal to manually attack his foe? Instead, cast Black Blade of Disaster (if i remember the name correctly) and have at it.
Atleast BG2 is expandable enough to let you do what you want to, so nice work
i'm sure it took some effort. I'll stick to what D&D rules are already implemented though.
dulouz.
Yeah, if he had Black Blade of Disaster prepared and ready, it makes sense. But as it is, a mage is physically unable to even put a sword in his hand, let alone use it.
As far as Clerics go, it depends on the God, or whether you view 2nd Edition or 3rd Edition versions of the Forgotten Realms as more 'correct'. The favoured weapon for Clerics of Helm in 3rd Edition background is the Bastard Sword, for example (isn't Anomen always saying, 'Point the sword, and I shall strike!' ).
