I'm having a similar problem. I'm currently starting my 3rd party through BG2. Finally playing the infamouse Kensai that will dual to Mage. I have Ease of Use and Tactics Mod's installed and I'm getting a CRASH every, single time I try to play the game.

My party has JUST gone to the Slums, met Nalia and Lord Jierdan and started to leave to go help Nalia (my PC is a female and feels the need to respond to Nalia's urgency). When I leave the Copper Coronet, it turns dark and I get attacked by the Weimer Random Party That Always Attacks After Dark. I also refused to pay the $5,000 gp for the magic license. That's a bit of a problem since I currently have Jaheira, Anomen, AND Kelsey in the party.

At first, the game would crash as soon as the second round of combat began after the Cowled Wizards showed up. I figured I was just overloading the PC since there were 3 parties with spellcasters all firing spells and effects at the same time. So I tried just using hack-n-slash on Weimer's Attacking Party. That worked once (and I didn't take time to Save the game - aaaargh). But the game STILL crashed as soon as I started attacking the Cowled Wizards (I set up an ambush and cast a spell to attract them).

So, is it a game problem or is my PC just not able to handle the strain? I am running XP with a 40gb hard drive, but I only have 9gb of memory free...so maybe I am just overloading my system.

I will check to make sure the settings listed above haven't been changed, but I would appreciate any suggestions anybody else has.

BTW, my SECOND party PC is an assassin, and i had NO TROUBLE with the game crashing when I tried to poison his weapons. It worked great!
