One rule of sales is that it takes eight contacts with a prospect to get a yes. Now, I'm not suggesting that you're selling yourself here, but the principles still apply -- that it's quite common to get multiple rejections before you land that customer (so to speak).

I agree with Wellard, BTW. Find someone with common interests, and do that common interest together. That can then lead to dates and so on.

An alternative is to have tickets to something, and ask for company. I'm not talking about to a movie Friday night (although winning tickets is pretty cool, and a nice move); I'm talking about a play, a show, a concert... something that's an event.

Don't let the first rejection get you down. There will be plenty more... and plenty of acceptances to keep you going
