I find it interesting that people have different experiences of this battle. I wonder how the AI determines that...

When I fought him Sarevok I did try the backstab approach. But the bad guys were able to detect my fighter-thief before she got anywhere close enough to hit anyone up on the dais (even wearing the utterly worthless so-called "cloak of non-detection"), and Sarevok initiated dialogue. Sarevok et al then proceeded to rush the party--hasted it seemed--and my party was wiped out in seconds with the combination of Stinking Cloud (and was Web or Entangle used also? can't quite remember...) and the Tatoo of Power. God that Tatoo of Power thing is powerful. It was like a little neutron bomb that in about 4 quick consecutive blasts wiped me out every time. My party was only level 5-6, but still.

The following method relies on a weakness of the AI and summoning monsters, but it is surefire. The goal here is simply to win when other more difficult (but satisfying) strategies have failed. Anyway, here is how I finally ended up winning:

1) Keep the party back next to the entrance. Summon a couple of gangs of monsters as a barrier to protect your party. Equip characters with magic arrows and wands. IIRC, wand of frost and wand of heavens are the most effective. Haste, cast defensive spells, take potions.

2) Send a character who can create an explosion (arrow of detonation, potion of explosions, oil of firey burning, wand of fire, fireball spell) up along the RIGHT side of the hall. Do not expose the enemy. Reveal the area just up to the edge of where they are standing. Again, this character must be hasted. Have him direct the explosion to the edge of the fog of war where the bad guys are. Then run like hell back to the others.

3) Tazok and Angelo will not pursue your character. Sometimes they will eventually appear later in the fight if it goes on long enough, but it is as if they are stunned by the blast. (This is the AI weakness I mentioned.)

4) Sarevok will pursue your fleeing character. Place another gang of monsters on him for insurance. The summoned monsters will keep him occupied.

5) Semaj teleports next to your party. Hit him immediately with arrow of dispelling. Then direct all your fire upon him. He'll go down in a round or two.

6) Do the same with Sarevok (not sure if it has any effect but fire an arrow of dispelling at him for good measure, just in case it might help). He falls pretty fast.

With the party positioned by the door, if needed, you could send any characters who were badly hurt outside the door to quaff healing potions and then come back inside. But it won't be necessary.
