No, you do not have to have played through it. All you have to do, is to locate the folder called "saves" (is probably at C:\Program Files\Black Isle\Baldur's Gate\saves). In that folder, find your save game folder, open it, and copy your character's file. Then, go to the main BG2-directory, locate the folder called "characters" or something, and past the file in there.
