Apparently MSN Messenger (as in, the one you download from MS's site) should use your default browser, but Windows Messenger is hardcoded to use IE. Also, Firefox (among others) is reported to do a fairly mundane job of setting itself as default browser. Google for a program called 'SetBrowser', that should - in theory - fix your problem.
