Good point Q'alooaith, both of those weapons certainly could penetrate armors to a significant degree, and I'd be interested in seeing the force generated by different kinds of each. It should also be noted that gunpowder weapons took awhile to 'catch on'.

Once gunpowder weapons matured into siege weapons, castles also lost much of their capacity to keep armies at bay.
