A cleric/mage can indeed be a very potent weapon. There are those who use Aeire an note that in ToB she becomes a force of nature. I personally never use her as I cannot stand her constant whining. But I have run a few times with my PC as a cleric/mage and mopped the floor with every monster available. Try a good alignment as the boon of Lathander is quite a nice buff.
Cleric/mages come into their own at higher levels when you are able to combine sequencers or contingencies with high level abilities. Note that the Robe of Vecna improves casting time for clerical spells as well as mage spells.

Some deadly combinations:
Time Stop + Spell Trigger (3xLower Resistance)
3 x Implosion in a Chain Contingency
Doom + Lower resistance + Chromatic Orb
improved alacrity + any combination you might desire

what equipment you choose is up to you.
Robe of Vecna, Cloak of Balduran and Bracers of Defense AC 3 are standard equipment. There is a huge variety of weapons to use depending on your weapon preferences. Currently I favor Staff of the Magi and Sling of Everard but since your Cleric mage is self buffing they can wade into battle without to much worry especially with FoA or
Crom Faeyr.

My only complaint is that items which increase the number of available spells per level are almost exclusively in ring form.
