edit: also it doesnt have to have been a storm, just anything that could have caused the microelectronics of the modem to change slightly. Maybe it was dropped or something like that. There are a whole range of possiblities.

This machine hasn't been hooked to the internet in over 3 months. Of course, it could have happened before then, but I wasn't having any problems with the connection until after the upgrade.
