Likely effect (and reason): everything graphical will be redefined to a point where MS will be able to say "this is more efficient and only Windows supports it". I hope for Windows' sake that the computer graphics industry finds the new technology better to work with, or they will likely seek other platforms to work on. I see POSIX Systems (basically everything non-windows these days) becoming a bit more popular once Longhorn is released... or maybe in the interum while the world waits.
