The reason she had trouble breathing is called Pickwickian Syndrome. I am sure I won't have to explain why to you, Mel. The muscles get too weak to move the chest wall and diaphragm, CO2 builds up in the blood due to structural respiratory failure, and the patient collapses into CO2 narcosis and dies. We had one like that when I was a youngster. Had to have two hospital beds lashed together, and died when the nurse's aide forgot to raise the head of his bed when she was through changing the sheets.
