I guess it also comes down to how serious a gamer you are. I don't mean that in an arrogant way at all either. It's just a case of how much time do you put into gaming and does it figure largely enough in your life to warrant paying for it monthly.
For awhile it didn't, for me. I hadn't the time to play enough as to justify my subscription. And I was the same, I could easily afford it but just saw it as a waste of money if that was the case. I finally caved and started paying to play MMO games as my passion grew for them and my life got less hectic. But it all depends, for casual gamers maybe it can work and for others maybe not.
Luvian has got a good point there too. Hey, you could also give something up in your life that you aren't happy with (smoking for example if you smoke) in trade. The money would then not actually feel like it is being spent but being moved around. Something to think about, eh?
