What Sir Degrader said. Big League professional Hockey is in serious trouble both financially and in the TV ratings. Even in such strong hockey towns like Philadelphia there were tickets available for the first round of the playoffs which a few years ago would be impossible. There are a lot of theories as to why hockey is on the decline but the three that I think are the most likely reasons are:
a) Far too many sub-500 teams that make the playoffs. Really waters down the competiton aspect.
b) The season is waaaayyyy too long.
c) Over and over again I have heard many sports writers and commentators say the real season begins in the playoffs. Doesn't say much for the regular season.
