the way I understand it is that if you do long sets, you gain endurance instead of raw strenght. sure, you gain a bit of strenght aswell, its only natural. a cool(ish) fact is that if you train strenght with heavy weights, then switch to endurance-gaining sets, you actually lose quite alot of your maximum strenght. I train 4 times/per week, and I started out training nothing but maximum strenght, but I stopped a doing that a while back after I noticed that Id be panting after a walk from the bus station to school(about 200 yards...pathetic). So these days I train with medium lenght sets(12-15 reps), and try to do some jogging every now and then to improve the oxygen intake of the body...
