If you're using IE6, there's a possibility that you might need to download the Java language, as it isn't included as standard with that browser (Microsoft apparently upset Sun in the past and are no longer allowed to include it).
Most other browsers (including previous versions of IE) include Java as part of the standard installation.
If you do need to download Java, it will depend on your operating system how big the download is.
Once it is installed, the Java chat page should load in well under a minute, even on a dialup connection (it takes just a few seconds on ADSL).
