Silence spells do not usually work against enemy Mages( even those with the default AI) as they usually have a contingency to counter it with Vocalise. Fear-based and blind spells will work better, as does Insect Plague and such.

Enemy Priests however... are a different story.

With a simple level two spell, you can render multiple enemy Priests all but useless.
