I think he was joking about the melee-thing

And as for Jon's armor .. he has an amulet of stoneskin on. Nifty little thing.
But hey .. he's Jon Irenicus .. he doesnt *need* armor, 'cause no enemy is evr gonna hit him when you combine his spells with your intellect
