I agree that there are better things to do than to conduct this kind of research, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have merit. If they had arrived at the conclusion that darkly coloured cars were safer I would've thought it strange, but I don't see why it doesn't make sense that white, lightly coloured, and silver cars are easier to spot in the dark and thus slightly safer? Same thing as advicing pedestrians to wear bright clothes if they intend to walk by the road in the dark.
