SPOILERS!
In the book in the section titled The Scouring of the Shire, the hobbits come back home to find that Saruman has effectively taken over. The hobbits raise a revolt. Saruman has Wormtongue tell how he killed the mayor. Wormy snaps and kills Saruman. Wormy is then killed by the hobbits.
Unfortunately, The Scouring was cut out of the movie, so who knows what'll happen.
