Since it involves the use of the CLUA console and/or a 3rd-party program such as Shadowkeeper, yes, it is technically cheating. But is it cheesy or even the least bit unfair? Certainly not. Playing with your avatar is more for "fun" reasons than anything else, and nobody's going to think anything less of you for it. But note that there are some avatars that are NOT fair: The "Shadow Thief" sprite-set, for example, moves twice as fast as a normal character, so giving yourself that avatar is equivalent to hacking yourself the Boots of Speed--and still having your Boot slot free.
But Male Elven Mage? Sure, go right ahead.
