The cheapest way is like andrewas said. Get a serial cross-over cable, also called a laplink cable or a null modem. It shouldn't cost more than 10 - 15 dollars. Then use hyperterm. It will be on the slow side (115kbps), but cheaper than anyother solution.
Once the connection is established, you either "put" files or "get" them depending on which machine you are on. You may have to configure the COM ports, but there is an easy window to do that. There is also a window for the file xfers so you don't need to remember the commands.
