I would have to say desert too. Not so much because of the temperatures involved (hot or cold), but because I would imagine that long hikes in one particular direction (eg, always heading north) would be more managable due to the flat surface of most deserts, as opposed to the vast chasms and unmanagable terrain in the Arctic.
Not just that, but the desert is actually cool in the evening so you would have very hot and very cool. Wheras I would imagine that the Arctic is just cold 100% of the time.
