I did not care for Diablo at all because it is almost purely hack and slash. That is the only other RPG I've tried out. The game pretty much consists of reflexes: click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click. The reason BG is so good is that it brings AD&D to life in a CRPG--which means following a story, figuring out the plot, roleplaying, etc.
I too am thinking about trying a new CRPG out and have gleaned a fair bit from various boards on this subject...
What I have consistently heard is that Planescape: Torment is plot driven and very, very good--there's much less fighting, though. Icewind Dale is the opposite--it's almost all fighting and has relatively little story, and in general is more of one long dungeon crawl; I've heard the fighting is very good.
Others RPGs that I've seen recommended a lot are Arcanum and Pools of Radiance.
It is a strategy game, but I've been hearing some good things about Stronghold. I like Age of Kings/The Conquerors so it sounds like it would be right up my ally.
