We heard it too (rather, my wife) over here in this part of thw world.
To put it into context, what I think was meant iirc is that repeated washing or scrubbing would do something or other (I really don't remember as I don't bother with this rubbish unless it's printed in Lancet or something) that would make it carcinogenic.
So now my wife is on a water-bottle hunt (ie buy new ones for the kids to bring to school - never mind that there are water coolers installed).
