Well,
punctuation means more to me, since it can change the entire meaning of a sentence. using the correct word usually will not since people tend to automatically substitute the word that offers the correct meaning someone was trying to achieve. it's usually more obvious to me when someone might want to use two to or too but hastily wrote the wrong one then it is to know if someone meant something one way or another because of there being no comma or whatnot.
I disagree that the written language is any more stingently adhered to for gramatical error.
For example, in my high school years ago, my teacher complained one day that a board of directors for the english department was sending grammatically incorrect emails. If the supposed people who oversee the teachers dont know it, then society in general probably doesnt know it, or care to for the most part.
Id hazard a guess that outside of school and commercialized writing (books etc) the majority of the populace would tend to overlook poor word choice (such as whom who etc) and focus more on the meaning of what someone was trying to say. As i mentioned above, meaning is much more determined by the commas periods semi colons etc than by the actual words used.
