That's pretty much what I did, though not like a manaic
I think the best way to avoid lightning is yes, not to be carrying a lot of metalic things, or any metal for that matter. But I really do think the best way to avoid it is to have rubber built into the bottom of your shoes, that way you'll be grounded by it (and since lightning comes from the ground, it's not likely to hit you).
