I saw it a couple of years ago... I think 2001, on a bookshelf in a Books-A-million, it was a whole series in one big graphic novel. It wasn't anything like the series. the manga goes places the show could only dare to not show the audience. Examples include Shinji seeings his mother in the eva etc... It's a nice work, and it might be re-released now that Eva's suddenly become a big hit again (why's that again? oh yeah the movies...) another thing to look for is the Live Action Eva movie that's in production now!
