The way you could tell it was a fruit is because of the dried out flower on the tip. The base of the flower is the ovary (fruit). Once fertilized the flower dries out and the fruit (ovary) at the base of the flower develops. I don't think there are any poisonous cacti I know of, but you shouldn't eat ANY wild plant until you're sure you know what it is! Just a word of advice. Many plants are quite deadly or at least can make you ill.
