When you're dual-classing, keep the fella in question at the back ranks (use spells like Sanctuary or Invisibility if the situation is bad enough); the rest of your party should (hopefully ) be strong enough to defeat your adversaries.
Btw, how did you ("legally") get such stats for your paladin ??? (--)
There are 3 classes from which you cannot dual-class -- ranger, paladin, bard. So I'm afraid your ranger will have to remain in his class; making an elven ranger would be good in this case as elves get a +1 to both damage and THAC0 when using long swords or bows (and a possible dex of 19 as well!!!).
In my case, I usually dual-class fighters into the thief/spellcaster classes.
