Does it really matter what happened ? Stories are being made up during and after every war. Heroes are created that way. What they teach you in school in historyclass, do you actually believe everything that's written in that book ?
This is nothing more than a story that will be more appreciated by later generations. Historybooks are made that way. I know... i was there.
