Dafan, those values are way too low! If a human lung can't contain more than 4 liters we would be panting all the time. Look at the original saying again "The average human lung holds 3.5 liters of air.". I interpret that as stating the total, or maximum, lung capacity. If you take a deep breath and exhale you don't empty the lungs so there is still air in them. Therefore it is obvious that a lung can contain more air than you are able to exhale.
