How useful a character is depends on how you use them. An Assasin may "suck" in some circumstances, but if you use them properly, they will absolutely OWN.

Chain contingency: stone, prot from magic weapons, shadow door.
This should give you enough time to cast Timestop Then shapechange: Mindflayer and then 3/4 hits (max.) later the fighter is down and dead.
