Another PC hardware question SVP

My wife's PC does not seem to be detecting the USB ports. There are only 2 and their 1.1 or 1.0; I dunno, it's old.

After a while it just says no signal detected and goes to sleep. Moving the mouse does not bring the monitor back on. I plugged the mouse into the PS/2 port via an adapter, and then it works.

Sounds like the USB controller is disabled or the driver got corrupted. Go into Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager and look for error messages. I'd also try to update the driver, then disable/enable the USB controller and reboot.

Second failure in a short period of time, Variol. How old was this machine? A new MoBo may be in the offing...

... but before that, go into My Computer, Properties, and make your way to the Device Manager. You should be able to see the status of the USB ports from there... look for little yellow triangles with exclamation points in them.

Thanks you two,
I have not had a chance to look at it yet. I'll take a look...

MB is out btw; the case way too old.

MBs can still be found for old form factors... but that doesn't mean much of anything else will work out :(

Let's hope for drivers or something...

Universal serial bus controllers
USB Root Hub
Via Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller

That's it; no triangles etc.

Hmmmm... do you have another mouse you can try? Could be the mouse just going bad... that's a lot cheaper to fix than a MB :twocents:

I can't see why the mouse would work with a PS/2 adapter on it and not when it's directly in the USB port.

Neither can I.... but you never can tell. Could be some issue with contacts or something.
