Who tries event

I played around with the who-tries event and the open-lock ability, and I have to admit that I failed totally.
What I wanted to do at first was a who-tries event with a must-have value, however, I was not able to find out what a typical value is... :(
I even used a logic block event to test it and got the impression that all my PCs had a value higher than 0 and smaller than 1.
Perhaps somebody with ADD/FRUA experience can tell me where my mistake is...

Hmm. I've been doing some testing since first reading this post and can not get it to work either. :( I'll keep looking into it and report back.

Perhaps you could already tell me the typical range of values for thieves' abilities, especially picking pockets and opening locks. I have not much experience with the ADD-system. Are the ranges similar to strength/wisdom etc (3-20)?

Re: Who tries event

The ranges for thieve's abilities are 0 to 100%. I've tried using the '%' sign and listing the number as a decimal, but neither one work. I'm still trying things.

Uatu's site might have a table of thieve's skills...he has a lot of tables for various AD&D things. :D

Re: Who tries event

Ah, I was always looking at Uatu's beautiful art and totally oversaw that section... :D

Okay, open locks is ranging from 25% to 99% for a thief if I read it right (I assume the 1st edition rules have not changed that much...). AH! Perhaps this means that if I use the GET_OPENLOCKS (or whatever) script, I might have to use values between 0 and 1, e.g. 0.25...

I tried this, but DC will not allow the use of "." in the box.

Re: Who tries event

Oh... that's mean. But perhaps it is possible in the script... I will try that tonight.

Okay, I spent most of the day working on this. :) I would like to think that it wasn't wasted as I learned a bit about the Logic Block event. :)

There is a bug with DC. The Who Tries event works fine, but DC is not storing any values for thief skills, including backstabbing along one with the ones in the event. You can use a script to set a PCs thief skill to a number and that works with the Who Tries event.

The bug with DC is that it is storing null strings by default for the values of the thief skills.

Re: Who tries event

Aha... Hm... Well, to me that problem is not serious (the story does not depend on the development of the characters' abilities), but for those who want a typical adventure, it is sad.

I don't look upon it as sad, but something which seems like it should be easy to fix. :D
