Biggest Game Flops

A listing of the biggest flops in gaming, according to a guy who writes for Yahoo Games. So... what do you think? Did they get 'em right? Or miss one?

Yay, I failed to play any of them, I'm tempted to go and dig out some old pre-release reviews and see how they fared - probably far better than deserved. I'm fairly sure the list is too short though.

Also, never played any of them. Only actually heard of one of them (Daikatana).

I'd put Dungeon Lords and Crysis on my list.

Daikatana is one of the most famous game flops budget wise ever. Next to the infamous case when they buried a few thousand copies of E.T. in the mexican desert. (Edit: Oh that is actually on the list too! Missed it.) But a budget flop isn't necessarily a bad game - just one that didn't sell well for various reasons. Shenmue was actually alright. It wasn't amazing (due to the whole 90% talky talk vs. 10% smashy smash). The getaway was also alright, but once again, nothing brilliant. These are just games which didn't sell anywhere near their ridiculous targets.

Shenmue basically put you in the shoes of some 20 something year old kung-fu master who lives his life TO THE DETAIL. You had to earn money and run errands etc. etc. All you wanted to do was kick bad guys about a bit but NOOOOO you have to take your grandma to the bloody pictures first. Same with The Getaway - simply too much detail, and the details is what costs money to make.

You have to stop getting excited every time you see the word 'dungeon' - remember what your mother told you: "not all dungeons are fun to play in, read the small print and don't get carried away by the idea of leather and whips."

:D
