What is the latest I can start the expansions?

I'd like to do HoW and TotL without exporting and importing my characters. At what points can I start HoW and TotL without screwing up my game?

Technically for HOW, it's before going up the stairs to fight Father Poquelin. The moment you go up the stairs, no chance to go to HoW.
