The Army has a new sniper rifle.

News story.

Whatever happened to the old tried, true, and effective M82A2? I guess with close to 75lbs of body armor and the new equipment vest, carrying a 31lb SASR is out of the question!

I think the Brits have something like that accurate up to a mile. Kinda scary, a mile is a long ways. Someone can put you down and be gone long before anyone knew where they were firing from.

Isn't what the brits have a modified version of that L85 rifle?

To clarify, the "New Rifle" is in the link. It is the 7.62 NATO. The old SASR which is the .img is the M82 which appears to have the A2 feature, which is the .50 Cal.

7.62mm NATO fall flat at about ????, way shy of one mile, you will find a general google search of center mass; 600m. Believe it or not! However, special ammo is produced for these types of rifles.......

The Brits have two calibers as well. The basic is the L96 caliber 7.62 NATO, and then two other special calibers and different variants. Additionally, the AS50 which is .50Cal BMG, same as US. 12.7 x 99 comes in different variations as well.

The .50, which was my favorite is unequaled on the field of return fire. Here is a link from the Canadians who have recorded the longest range kill to date. That distance is far greater than one mile. And again a special ammo is used.

That image above really irks me. I can only image that some reporter saw the rifle and grabbed the first soldier he saw to put it in position and capture his photo. Terrible I tell you, just horrendously terrible.

I got that impression too. Might as well paint a bullseye on his head.

I was thinking about the DMR rifle, not a sniper rifle.

DMR? Designated Marksmen Rifle? That is either one of two situations:
1. A platoon so well equipped it has a DMR, and the 'crack' shot of the platoon gets the privilege of having it. Usually an old M14, or an 'acquired' M24!

2. The crack shot of the platoon gets the improved scope and night sight to fit his weapon, and he is designated the DMR.

Many armies have different variants of many types of weapons, and usually somebody will have a weapon that is unusual. But, that makes it normal! A fire team of dismounts equipped with M4 would consider an M16A2 a DMR. Whereas a M16A2 squad would consider the "Colt" designated SDM a DMR..And on it goes.

But me tinks you are referencing the L86 LSW.

Yes I was. :D As I recall, it's funny that weapons like these are refitted many times as the L86 was supposed to be a support rifle akin to a SAW but the low ammo count prevented that. The longer barrel (as in the pic) does make it a heap more accurate than the L85.
