HELP!!!! I have finally convinced my wife to let me copy her old albums ( she hasn't listened to them in ~ 10 years) but I'm not really sure the best way to do it. I think all I need is a y spliter from Radio shack for the outputs off the record player into the back of my sound card. (But do I need to ground it) and what program would you use to copy it to the computer. Another question I have is there a good program that will clean up noise and the like prior to burning it and what is the best way to go about doing it (I.E make the first copy from the record , then run a cleaner program to an another file then copy that clean copy)
As usual thanks in advance for any and all help.

This is free, and seems like it would do what you want. I haven't had much of a chance to mess with it yet, but I'm planning on using it to produce my next CD, as it looks like it's capable.

The Audacity link is the one you want.

Don't plug the turntable directly into the soundcard - depending on your cartridge, the signal levels aren't compatible.

Use the "tape out" jacks of an amplifier (or A/V switch) to send the signal to the soundcard. It might be hard to find an amp that can handle a phono-in signal.

I was in comp usa the other day and they have what you need!!!
Its a USB turntable made for exactly what you are trying to do. You put your records under the needle and plug it into your usb jack and it will let you record your record onto your PC. I can't remember exactly how much it was though.

OOoo, that's nifty. I might have to get one, eventually, just to have it.

A buddy of mine just got a similar turntable for something really reasonable... $50 or so. I'll see if I can get details.

I work for Staples and we something similar to that for cassette tapes. I'm not sure if we have the same for records.

Just ordered my $50 converter unit... should arrive tomorrow. I'll have an update by Monday on how well it works.

I just got a USB turntable from Amazon. I tried it on a 45 of Red Skelton saying the pledge. Works great but a bit pricey. I also got the up cartridge.

What is the Up cartridge?
