I have cleared out the 2nd catacomb stag in Durlag's Tower,
but cannot defeat the Dwarven Doomguards.

The question I have is there another way to going on to
the 3rd catacomb level with out defeating them? If not
what is the easiest way to defeat these dwarfs, and
what type of weapons/spells would you suggest???

This is kind of a cheesy tactic but it should do the trick. I found the lightning wand to be very effective with those guys. It will help if you have a potion of absorption, of course, so that you don't have to worry about the lightning ricchochets. But otherwise firing the wand from the corner area is the next best thing. Anyway, I kept everyone back where the hallway meets the room and drew them out one at a time. I had my thief stealth and reveal them from the fog of war by firing an arrow to get each to leave the group and attack my thief. Then my mage and fighter-mage both zapped them with lightning wands.

Yes, as Lemernis says, it is MUCH easier to defeat them one or two at a time than all at once.

correct me if i'm mistaken, but don't the doomguards have complete magic resistance? if this is the case, how can the wand of lightning work against them?

OK, heres what I did. I had everyone but my three fighters in back. Khalid (w/ gaunts of ogre power and Longsword +2, AC -5) minsc (w/ gaunts of dex and Spidersbane AC-4) to boost their poorer stats, and me with a -9 AC and a Morning Star +1. I put those three at the entrance to the doorway, and had imoen fire at one of the doomgaurds, making sure they focused on me. I attacked them w/ the fighters. They Died. My THAC0 was 5 or 6.

Awww geez, not another chaotic neutral? Where do these people come from anyway?

If we're talking about the four uberdwarves in the room right next to the false staircase, and which guard the chest that contains Kiel's (?) enchanted morngingstar, yes, they definitely will go down when hit with the lightning wand. They are identified as doomguards. I made pretty easy work of them with the lightning wands, actually. But if by some chance the topic starter meant the four warders, then, no lightning wands alone wouldn't get the job done.

i played the game to chapter 7 before going into the tower, I maxed out exp before i got to the warders, and i can tell you that it was the toughest fight i faced in the game. Especially pride, he is a real dick. I focused on him with my main chracter(ranger) after lowing my AC as much as possible. If it wasn't for a level 9 Dynaheir blasting away with magic missle, and branwen with the wand of the heavens i dont know what i would have done.

I think the topic starter is refering to the doomguards and this is getting OT, but since a satisfactory solution has been given... http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

Re: the four warders, the last one, Love, casts dire charm or something like that. He was the biggest pain in the ass I thought. There are several ways to defeat the warders. Here's what I did:

1) summoned plenty of monsters first and placed them as a protective buffer surrounding my party
2) had my party surround Love except for one character with arrows of dispelling
3) immediately had one character sap him with Vampiric Touch as another shot an arrow of dispelling into him and the remaining members firing arrows of biting or piercing or acid or whatever--oh, and my cleric used the amazing Wand of Heavens, of course. (I had a custom party of six.)

Anyway, Love went down very quickly, and the remaining ones weren't so hard to take out. As I said, I found Love to be a major pain because he instantly charms one of your players.
