Torrance Co. woman hospitalized with plague

SANTA FE (AP) - A Torrance County woman is in critical condition with plague.

The state Department of Health did not release the 58-year-old woman’s name but says she developed bubonic plague, which progressed to plague pneumonia.

It’s the second case of plague confirmed in the state this year. A San Juan County man was infected with plague in April. He recovered.

The Health Department is investigating the woman’s home to determine if there’s a risk to other people.

Kinda freaky, eh?

Between ten and twenty people a year contract the plague in the United States. Almost exclusively from the rocky mountain stats and California. About 14% of cases are fatal. Worldwide there are about 3,000 cases per year.

Wow, really? I never knew that.
