This may be a bit of a long shot, but what the heck.

I want to cartoonize (real word? maybe not...) an image, a picture of myself to be exact :D

Now I recall seeing a tutorial aaaaages ago, and losing it. On a scale of cartoonyness, it was up there with the good 'uns.

Anyone point me in the right direction, or possibly give me a hand?

Well the easiest way is to draw the outline of your face over the photo of yourself on a new blank layer, highlighting the features you most want to stand out (like your nose, chin, etc). Fill it in with solid colors, then maybe cell shade the sides of things and that should look just fine. I suggest drawing lines only around your eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth, and facial outline as well as just around the outside of your hair. You could also use heavy Gaussian blurs and pixilation to try and gather colors for your skin, eyes, and hair. Remember you need a dark color for the "shadow" color and a light color to use with the brush set to overlay might help as well. "Cartoony" style almost never includes lips. It's basically a shaping of the face as it is recognizable on a bare-bones level. If you've ever seen a Nintendo Wii caricature, for instance, those images "look" like people even though they are very simple. If you want to talk with me more about this I could always load your mug shot into Macromedia Flash, draw some lines around it, fill it in, and even use radial or cell shading on it.

I have found that most photoshop "tips, tricks etc." Work well enough in The Gimp. So, here is my special link for The Gimp tutorials, under the expert module is a tip called sketch. This may or may not be what you want.
Hope it helps.
