Here's the problem...I upgraded my NIS from 2005 to 2007 today for no particular reason (2005 was working ok, but I decided to get a later version). So I bought the upgrade from Symantec's site and installed it (it came with Norton System Works). The installation seemed to work ok, only problem is now I cannot access my university network via VPN, which I was able to do with NIS2005. If I turn the firewall off it connects fine.

I can't remember if I initially had this problem with 2005, and in any case I don't remember what I did to fix it. I tried setting it (vpn.babson.edu) as a "trusted" program (by turning off the Norton firewall, connecting and then clicking on "Trust", but it still didn't work.

Can anyone suggest a solution? This is very irritating.

What's even more annoying, is that when I put it as a trusted program not only does it still not connect, even when I turn the firewall off it also doesn't connect. I had to remove it as a trusted program before I could get it to connect again.

Does anyone know what process this uses, so I can allow it in the settings? TDC? Help!!! :(

Are you getting paid for this, Yorick, or is it just an obsession?

Let's see if I get this. A newly installed NIS2007 denies access to a VPN. Shutting the Firewall down makes it possible to connect, unless it's in the Trusted list, in which case connection is not possible even then. That's really strange...
When you installed 2k7, did you do it over 2k5, or did you uninstall 2k5 first? Because I think it should take over your previous configurations if installed over the previous version. Even if you uninstalled 2k5, if you haven't cleaned it out with CCleaner or something like that, configurations should still be floating around somewhere. When the Firewall is on, can it see the VPN? I'm guessing yes, since you can place it on the Trusted list, but still worth to ask...

Nevermind, I fixed it. I went to Advanced Settings, then unticked the "Stealth Blocked Ports" option. It was a bit of a pain, but I worked it out. Note that I don't know what the negative of doing this is...

If left unattended, your PC may be vulnerable to port forcing if it's blocked ports are visible. These days, it's mostly harmless, and even if it did occur, I do believe NIS has some protective measures against those attacks.

I just took Norton System Works out last week. There was never anything wrong with it, other than slowing down my system too much. I put in some of the free stuff from the other thread. Then both my wife's and my PC could no longer get our emails. So, I had to remove my anti-virus program. Believe me, we tried everything else.

When you install a program and that happens, it's garbage, plain and simple. I never got any message after install saying: hey, these default setting will prevent you from getting any emails!!

I switched from Systemworks to just Norton Antivirus this year. Never had much trouble with either, although NA DOES seem to want to block things on msn for me on occasion, which means going in and telling it to let me do it once in a while.

Oh and did we miss TDC's birthday here? If we did, then, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TDC!
