I recently hit lvl 25 with my mage in SoA (xp cap removed), and I do not have access to ToB (means I cannot buy it), so no comets/alacrities. The question is - what is the greatest fighting tactics for such a mage. Now I just entered Underdark (no cheating, just did all the quests, and solo), and can cast 5 lvl9 spells, 6 lvl8... The rest hardly matters, IMO ;)

So what is the good tactics, what are the greatest spells, especially against magic-resistant crowds of drows and mind flayers?

Download the bonus merchant add-on, buy the robe of vecna and kick some butt ;)

Against Mind Flayers: Time Stop.
Especially good if you have the Robe of Vecna and Amulette of Power; because you can cast it in 4 tenths of a Round :D

And once you`ve got them stuck, they have low HP, and can`t drain your Intelligance... so, WHACK with whatever weapon you`re using

As for drow, use summons.

Hey, I already have that robe, all the good mage (IMO) equipment in the game (amulet of power, robe, ring of gaax, ring of wizardry, staff of magi etc)

On mind Flayers: In 3 rounds i will not be able to kill them all even with the black blade of disaster. And I am a pure mage, planning on never engaging in melee (till now, succeeded)

Most Mind Flayers can actually be killed by Death Spell, or at least, the ones you fight when rescuing Phaere at least. They are annoying because in three moves they can kill you. Intelligence Drain, Stun, then whack you. It seems to be an automatic death...... Real pain.

Death Spell is actually even usefull in Throne of Bhaal, there are a lot of 8 HD or lower monsters in Throne of Bhaal. It seems however, that it only counts for some of the minor fights, can you imagine the final battle, the last one ever, being done by a single Death Spell????

Oh, tactics for mages? In a solo battle, try Immunity: Divination and Shadow Door. Means you can't have any spells cast on you, AND they can't dispel it either!!!

Or try Spell Trap and Immunity: Abjuration. Result, an undispelable Spell Trap. Even "The Ruby Ray Of Reversal" won't work, because that only dispels up to Level 9. The Ruby Ray of Reversal is Alteration, so blasts straight through Immunity: Abjuration.

Hope I helped you, and didn't confuse you................

Made some tests on mind flayers in the Bodhi's dungeon, and they seem to have a decent magic resistance, which renders them nearly immune to Death Spell. And also to Horrid Wilting :(

No other enemy annoyed me more than these flayers. Finally I ended up shapechanging into an Iron Golem, imp. hasting myself and smacking them to the floor, but in their lair, they will be more of trouble than then. Is there a summon which is immune to their attack?

You just contradicted yourself. Anyway, Ruby Ray of Reversal will work against Spell Trap + Spell Immunity:Abjuration. It will remove the Spell Trap first, then if you cast another one, remove the Spell Immunity as well.

Most enemy Mages do not have more than one Ruby Ray of Reversal however, so a Spell Shield + Spell Immunity:Abjuration combination will be very effective against them.

As for Mind Flayers, cast Project Image and mob them with Skeleton Warriors and Mordenkainen's Swords, and I do mean mob. Summons casted by PI illusions ignore the summoning limit.

yes, all skeletons are immune to mind affects, such as the mind flayer's stun/confusion attacks (not sure on the stun though)

Dundee Slaytern 09-16-2002 10:36 AM

Skeleton Warriors are immuned to normal weapons, psionics( including stun), charm, and confusion. They are also 95% magic resistant and wield +3 weapons( they can hurt Iron/Adamantium Golems).

In short, they rock. :D

Also, if ur bored, cast a couple Mordenkainen's Swords :D Can't remember what they're resistant to though.
