According to the (IMHO) insane Sony President, it is.... (It's in german)

Here is an english interpretation:
Quote:

Besides defending the PS3, Harrison took time to evangelize the device, which will launch worldwide this November. In particular he said the Linux-based operating system on the console's hard drive will have enough processing power and non-gaming functionalities to render traditional PCs--most of which use a form of Microsoft's Windows OS--moot in the home. "We believe that the PS3 will be the place where our users play games, watch films, browse the Web, and use other [home] computer functions," said Harrison. "The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC."

Erm... I have three words to say: OMG ROFL!
Apparently, noone informed him of the glaring faults of a Play Station(lack of FSAA, Anisothrophy, vectored graphics, resolution, no programming interface or means...).
EDIT: But here's to Linux!

My initial response to this, w/out even opening the thread was "No, because it's made by Sony, and the DRM will probably crash it". Now I can understand how they thought their DRM was a good idea.

...The prerequisites for being the President of a multibillion dollar company include fanaticism bordering on insanity for ones company, apparently.

Other than that...man, that's a gimmick I'll never buy.

Lol... now THAT'S FUNNY!

Wasn't a similar prophecy about the PS2 announced in roughly the same way (as I type this on my brand new socket 939 computer)?

So it's basically a PC with less games and programs. With the Sony fee.

Console makers get all excited about the fact that their new system is a bit faster at some aspects of graphics than top end PC's... ignoring the fact that within 3-6 months of their release they'll be slow POS's again comparatively. THEN... PC gamers will have another 4-5 years of playing games made for some ancient crappy console because game makers now need to design games for those old (PS3/Xbox2) platforms.

The only console maker I have much faith in is Nintendo. They seem to understand that even when they're new... consoles are VERY POOR computers. The Wii is sticking with games that are well designed for the realities of console play (and even designing new interfaces that may just expand the playability of consoles), instead of putting out games that are much more suited to PC play (like ANY first person perspective game).

I used to love playing Shooters against someone using a gamepad... we called em "cannon fodder".
