I am just about done purchasing all my hardware for my new build. I still need to get the monitor. Over on another forum someone said that the LCD monitor to really supply the graphics you need for gaming is 800:1. However, the cheapest monitor I could find would put me $100 over budget.

For those in the know, is this true? Most models that I have looked at that are good average 500:1 Contrast Ratio. What has been your experience? Thanks!

A good cantrast ratio and response time is a great thing, but is in no way a neccesity, I would say go for the best monitor you can on your budget and you should be fine, usually, only the hardcore PC people (like myself) are picky about that sort of thing.

Hive, I knew (and was hoping) you'd come through! I understand about the response time, but in your opinion will the 500:1 do me just fine for gaming?

do you have a link for the monitor you are looking at?

I want to not only be able to play games but video editing, et.al. (Can't afford a 19")

I would have to say go with the first one, although its has a slightly lower contrast ratio, it has a much nicer response time, and most importantly, it looks a hell of a lot cooler than the second one :D

I think the only reason the second one is a bit more expensive is because it has built in speakers, which you probably don’t need and will never use

If it were up to me, I would easily go with the first one ;)

Hive, I chose the first one also. Dummy me, after I posted, decided to check out Viewsonic's own site (such an intelligent decision on my part) and I liked what I saw. It seems that this VX series is their second best line of quality and they have four lines. Thanks for your imput because you confirmed my choice for me.
