Every Halloween is different, whether it be your children and their costumes, or those of us who are candy giver-outers. This year was pretty slow, didn't get more than 10 or so hits here, way less than normal, so I have a ton of candy left LOL.
Seems this year was the Jolly Roger year, in that almost every single kid that came to my door chose the Jolly Roger candy first and foremost! (I hold out a giant bowl and let the kids take what they want). It was also the "Mother" year, in that I had three mothers who also apparently wanted to trick-or-treat and delved into my candy basket. At least one was dressed up, kinda, in a dark red dress with a veil. Or maybe that's how mom usually dresses, I dunno. Odd family, she had two girls with her who I'd guess at age 13 or so, and first daughter took a few pieces of candy, then the other took 5, and the first sister then berated her for it calling her "impolite" and was beginning to go into some sanctimonious rant when I just interrupted and said "Oh it's OK, I have tons of candy here, take what you want." And it worked, the would-be ranter sister took a few more pieces and then they both happily walked away LOL, that's when Mom took her share LOL. Here's the kicker though, mom then kinda looks behind her and I hear a slight "oh!" from her and then out peeks this 13 or 14 year old boy. He'd been standing behind those fueding sisters, and the mother, the entire time, poor guy LOL. He finally gets his turn as the mother notices him and moves away to let him come up to the candy bowl, and he only takes two pieces, all politely and walks away all quietly. Dang his sisters were totally up and all over it and overbearing, mother same way, this kid so is not like them and I bet his life is always him standing behind them. Ugg. Had two other Mothers take from my candy bowl too, not even dressed up, LOL just weird giving out "trick-or-treat" candy, something for younguns, to an adult that may even be older than I am LOL. One kid I did get had a decent outfit, he made an actual effort, he is my Halloween kid of the year LOL. He had this regular skeleton mask, just a regular black cape, nothing special when I first saw him, he was really a litte guy too, 3 feet tall I'd reckon. I squatted down and he looked at me and he had one of those masks that drips blood, he had all kinds of tubage going on LOL hooked up to this mask he was fumbling with. Not sure how it works, but I guess he pushes a button and it moves the "blood" which is beneath clear plastic over the skeleton mask. He only took one piece of candy from my basket, and when I did not move away, he said "What.. can I take another piece!?" I said "Sure take a few pieces, go ahead!" (cause I got tons of candy and at that point it was looking pretty lacking re trick-or-treaters this year doh). So he grabbed a few more pieces, and then he walked away, and his parting words were "Thank You! Have a good holiday." Kinda unexpected for one so small, so adult sounding LOL. Funny. Ah, another Halloween come and gone. What did you all do this year for Halloween, if anything? |
Kid count so far- 0.

Today's just another day, aside from handing out candy. I did my Halloween thing at a party on Friday, so it feels like Halloween is already over (it's only 7 pm here, though).
Wings were the theme at the party - almost every single girl there was wearing something with wings. Can make things a bit awkward... ;) |
Trick or treating this year... carved pumpkins yesterday, and did my first try at an "artistic" one, where you don't cut holes in it, but cut away layers of pumpkin shell to leave a thin skin behind.
It was pathetic. I don't have good tools for it, and I'm not likely to find any. I didn't have a good stencil, and my wife suggested I do a pirate... like I can draw one of those A face with an eyepatch... yeah, that's it :D Kids had fun, although trick or treaters were light. Still have two huge bags left over (more than half our stash), and I'm sick and tired of chocolate (something I never thought I'd say). Had some neighborhood kids over after trick-or-treating to celebrate Corbin's birthday with cake and ice cream, and that went well. The big six-year-old is now sound asleep in bed, waiting for next year. The dog did not do well, though... too much excitement for a puppy. Okay, for a big puppy... he's almost eight months old, and he's almost grown into his feet. And just what he needed... lots of kids eating (and dropping!) chocolate cake. We'll see if he has the runs tomorrow... but I'm leaving for Atlanta, so I won't have to deal with it! |
Man, it is hard to believe it has come and gone so quickly. I used to live for Halloween when I was a kid. Great, fine memories indeed.

We had about 8 people.. man, in my old house in Louisville we'd get like 50...
Anyway, Halloween is my favorite time of year. The smell of the leaves in the air, the crisp air, the smell of burning jack o lanterns.. I loved it more as a kid though.. |
0 kids this year, but not surprising really. My house is the last house before the metal fence which divides the occupied houses from the half-built ones. Didn't expect many to come down my road, but I at least expected a few.

Sadly they don't really celebrate halloween here. I need a new nationality.

A few Aussie kids have been getting in n the "free lollies" lark over the past few years. Always surprises the heck out of us home owners, because out of the blue you get a knock on the door and some plaintive little voices mouthing the T words.
I was surprised coming home from work to see 2 badly dressed ghosts (my god - that sheet with holes thing is never gong to catch on) wandering down a nearby street. At that pointin time I decided it was time to eat out for the night. I see some homeowners up in Perth have pressed charges against some kids for vandalising houses. Some traditions just don't transfer all that well to foreign countries I am afraid. |
Kids come to my door - 6
Kids who got candy - 0 Kids who got the hose sprayed on them - 5 We dont celebrate Halloween in Australia and I personnally like it that way. I only got 5 out of 6 because damn that last kid was fast! |
