How can I make CDs not autorun automatically in Win XP? Is this even remotely possible? I loathe these features.

I hate this too!!!

And there is no such option in windows XP itself but I found an easy way to do it .

Simply download and install CloneCD (even a demo version) and go to settings and disable it there (disable *both* autorun and auto instert notification). Maybe others programs have the option too? Anyway... it works perfectly this way. :D

(still if there is an easier way I'd be very happy to hear of it.)

You are one of thousands who would love to know :D
Here you go:

To Disable CD autoplay, completely, in Windows XP Home

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Then go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\policies\Explorer

Create a new value called: NoDriveTypeAutoRun
Type is: DWORD
Value is: 0x000000b5 (181)

-------------------------------------------
To Disable CD autoplay, completely, in Windows XP Pro

1) Click Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC

2) Go to Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System.

3) Look for "Turn off autoplay" then double click on it.
EDIT: And always remember to backup your registry before editing it ;)

While we're on the subject, here's another problem you may be able to help with, HT.

My comp came with an Atapi 52x CD-ROM. When changing CDs, XP doesn't recognise the new CD. Instead it shows the files and directories of the CD that was previously in the drive. The only way to get them to work was by right clicking on the icon in My Comp and selecting eject. This rendered some games with multiple discs unplayable (and is a PITA all round). I've since upgraded to an external DVD-RW, but i still use the old one on odd occasions. Any ideas?

Do you use any programs like Alcohol 120%/clone CD/daemen tools by any chance?

maybe try updating your firmware on the drive?

or simply do this:
start button
r/click
explore
r/click the drive in question
properties
autoplay tab

notice that there's several choices to make...
in the drop down for each one, make sure that "select an action to perform" isn't checked... especially in combination with "open folder to view files".

best bet is to make sure that you check "prompt me for action to take" for each of the content types in the drop down menu. mine has 6 content types available, not sure if that's standard or not.

Nope. None of that. It's been like it since day 1. Retailer said it was a common problem with xp and provided the right click/eject 'quick fix'. I've had a new processor since then and upgraded xp several times but nothing seems to fix the problem.

It's not really a big issue (any more) so don't lose any sleep over it. I was just wondering if you've heard of it before.

You could just run the CD manually, start -> Run -> Drive letter.
